The Global Coffee School’s
Home Coffee Training: Advanced Sensory
is a 4-week cutting-edge course in the comprehensive 'at home', mindful mastery of sensory theory, awareness, skills and practise, in coffee and beyond.
Following on from the Foundation Course, this course is the first of the Advanced Courses in the Home Coffee & Barista Skills Masterclass Series.
Led by Freda Yuan (three-time UK Cup Tasters champion, international barista competition judge and author of
‘Sip ‘n’ Slurp: A guide to expert coffee tasting’
), the course covers a range of Sensory theory and core-skill focus areas for the advanced home barista, including:
Week 1: Sensory Theory and Introduction to Sensory Awareness
Week 2: Attributes and Advanced Coffee Cupping & Tasting
Week 3: Comparing and Assessing Coffee Using Sensory and Brewing Masterclass
Week 4: Increasing Sensory Awareness
Via this GCS Online Education Portal, you can access and stream video lessons on-demand anytime, or download and watch offline, from desktop, phone or other devices.
Each video class, accompanied by full lesson description, key learnings, ‘pro-tips’ and ‘home-hacks’, can be accessed in order, by week, via the tabled tabs to the right of this page.
You will also find your practical homework tasks, theory tests, a lesson ‘toolkit’, ‘kit list’ and a host of resources to help you on your way in the column on the right-hand side of the page for each week.
Finally, in the Portal’s top bar menu, you will find two more helpful resources - the Roaster Directory and ‘Gear’. Here you can also access the ‘Noticeboard’, where exciting Global Coffee School and Community News will be posted.
The Roaster Directory lists a whole host of specialty coffee roasters and retailers across the world, which you can search according to the country or region that you are in if you want some inspiration or to find a roaster local to you from whom to buy your beans.
The ‘Gear’ page contains a comprehensive visual list and descriptions of all the equipment and kit pieces and that we will use or refer to within the Foundation and Advanced courses.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Freda Yuan
Freda Yuan is a professional coffee taster and buyer, originally from Taiwan and now based in London where she currently works as Head of Coffee for Origin Coffee Roasters in the UK.
After developing coffee as her career path, it has become a passion and addiction, and she is excited to share some of that passion with you here at The Global Coffee School.
Freda is three-time UK Cup Tasters champion, having won the SCAE competition in 2017, 2018 and 2020. She won third place in the 2017 World Cup Taters Championship in Hungry and is a judge for the international Barista competition, Coffee Masters.
